Chlorine shortages continue...but they are improving!
We have prepped for the 2022 Swim Season and while the shortage continues we have ramped up our purchases and hopefully can accommodate all orders of chlorine. We will continue to bring more in through the season. We do not anticipate running out. Below we have listed ways to alleviate excess chlorine consumption or switch to a system that doesn't use chlorine tablets. We have stocked up on Salt Water Chlorination systems as well if you’d like an estimate, just ask! Our BioGuard SilkGuard Complete 3” Tablets are a premium chlorine tablet that do not waste any chlorine; they only dissolve while the pool is filtering. The SmartGuard technology re-coats the tablet to stop dissolving when there is no flow.
Information to enhance your existing chlorine as well as alternatives to traditional chlorine tablets:

Step 1: Shock your pool on a regular basis
Tablets are a consistent sanitizer, but they do not do a great job of destroying organic contaminants* from the environment and bathers. Shocking your pool water is a needed step for proper pool maintenance. Shocks or oxidizers chemically destroy organic contaminants, remove combined chlorine and help restore water clarity. This can be a non-chlorine shock: our BioGuard Oxysheen®, a Low-Chlorine Shock: our BioGuard Smart Shock®; or a high chlorine unstabilized shock: our BioGuard Burn Out3®. Your daily sanitizer level only has to be between a 1-3, shocking increases the chlorine to higher levels for a short period of time to kill anything that isn't supposed to be there.
Step 2: Water enhancers will also alleviate the need for excess amount of chlorine by making your filter work more efficiently.
Why take the additional step of an enhancer?
Your pool is your investment. Having beautiful, sparkling clean water allows you to enjoy spending time in your pool. Enhancers bring out the beauty in your water and keep your filter working at maximum efficiency. Using products like Pool Juice™ to remove phosphates, Water enhancers like BioGuard Pool Complete or Pool Tonic® to help clear cloudy water and remove contaminants as well.
Step 3: Prevent algae before it becomes an issue
The addition of algicide is needed for proper pool maintenance. Sanitizers or shock/oxidizers alone may not keep algae at bay and this step is needed to keep your pool completely clear of any growth. This is the third part of the BioGuard 3-Step Pool Care System.
Do all algicides kill algae?
Not all algicides are alike, only algicides that have been approved by the EPA for killing algae actually perform. All BioGuard products have been thoroughly reviewed and proven effective, while various kinds of algae may require different treatments to ensure they are eliminated.
We have BioGuard Algae Complete®, Back Up® 2 and Algae All 60® in our arsenal for preventing and killing algae.
Step 4: Chemically Clean your Filter!
Does cleaning my filter really make that much of a difference?
Yes! Having a clean filter makes a significant impact on the quality of your pool’s water. A clean filter allows for proper filtration which is essential to achieving and maintaining safe, crystal clear water. BioGuard Kleen It® and Strip-Kwik® should be used at the beginning of the season and every 6-8 weeks.
Step 5: Testing, Testing.... is this thing on?
Every pool has characteristics that need to be regularly measured and adjusted. Your pH and sanitizer levels are the most important factors to check. Test your water two to three times per week with heavy to typical usage with our BioGuard 5-Way Test Strips. Additionally, bring your water to us, your BioGuard dealer, at pool opening, closing and every two weeks during the season. This will keep your pool in check and guarantee that you are applying the right products at the right time. Follow the steps provided by your BioGuard Dealer to have welcoming, brilliant and sparkling water; swimmers protected from disease transmission; and protected pool equipment and surfaces by having properly balanced water.
Alternative Sanitation: Switch to Salt Water Chlorination
Saltwater pools are favored for their simple and gentler approach to pool care, but they do have some unique needs when compared to traditional chlorine pools. If you'd like a quote on converting to salt water chlorination please send us a message asap and we will get that to you. We have pre-ordered a limited supply of Hayward Salt Water Chlorine Generators incase they are hard to find at the beginning of Spring. We do a lot of these installs in April before the pool is even open. Get on our schedule today!
